Student author earns spot in Are You Afraid of the Dark? book series
Welcome to our latest Tiger Spotlight, a place to showcase the great things our students are doing outside the district.
With a love of reading and a talent for writing, it’s no surprise that CHS junior Adriana Wilkinson has a creative mind. As soon as she was able to hold a pencil and learned how to write she could always be found churning out stories on paper.
“My mom was always the person I asked to read my stories,” she said.
Even with her talent, it still came as a shock that her short story was recently published in the Are You Afraid of the Dark? book series.

“I was screaming in excitement with my friends in the student lounge,” she said.
Adriana learned about the competition from her creative writing teacher, Heather Ball, who invited students to participate through Young Writers USA as part of their Fright Club 2025. Submissions were limited to 100 words or less. Excited by the challenge, Adriana got to work right away and completed her zombie-themed story in just two days.
Self-described as a “purveyor of a variety of genres,” Adriana enjoys reading everything from romance and science fiction to fantasy. However, it’s fantasy and dystopian writing that she is most passionate about creating.
“I love to create characters with a lot of depth,” she said.
Being selected for publication is a remarkable achievement and an experience Adriana will carry forward as she continues to grow as a writer. She plans to pursue a degree in English literature in college with hopes to write books or work in the publishing industry. #TigerPride
