Sixth grade students brought science to life during an educational field trip to John Boyd Thacher State Park. The visit served as the hands-on conclusion of their unit on geologic time.
Students explored the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing limestone formations in the world, to observe firsthand how Earth’s history is preserved in rock strata.
Highlights from the trip included:
- Hiking the Indian Ladder Trail: Observing dramatic rock formations to see how natural processes have shaped Earth’s surface over time.
- Analyzing the fossil record: Uncovering ancient marine fossils from more than 400 million years ago to gather evidence of Earth’s changing surface and past environments.
- Interactive learning: Exploring geological models and exhibits at the visitor center to map out key milestones in Earth’s history.
