Understanding your tax bill, payment options

Tax bills for the 2018-19 school year were recently delivered to Cohoes residents and we wanted to take the opportunity to illustrate exactly how your bill is calculated.

Each spring, the City of Cohoes releases a tentative assessment total, which the district uses to make estimations about tax rates. In late July, the city assessor’s office has all of the necessary data to release the final assessment roll. The district does not control any part of the assessment process.

In some years, the final assessment is greater than the initial estimate, meaning the change in tax rate paid by our residents is less than the increase in the tax levy.

In other years, the final assessment is less, meaning the change in tax rate will be greater than the increase in the tax levy.

The district’s approved budget for 2018-19 includes a 2.92 percent increase in the tax levy, which is the total amount of money the district can raise through property taxes.

This year, the final assessment roll was less than the initial estimate released in May, so you may see an overall increase in your tax bill greater than 2.92 percent.
