WWII Vet’s Valentine’s Day wish granted by Van Schaick students

Valentine's Day flag for vetA 104-year-old WWII veteran had his Valentine’s Day wish granted by students at Van Schaick Grade School.

Major Bill White (Ret.) of Stockton, California asked people from all over the country to send him cards to add to his scrapbooks.

Van Schaick students wanted to make sure their cards stood out, so they combined them all to create an American flag. It also included a recreation of the famous image of the American flag being raised at Iwo Jima, the battle for which Major White received his Purple Heart.

Principal Jacqueline DeChiaro said she was inspired to help after seeing Maj. White’s story circulating on social media.
