Two Cohoes high school students enrolled in the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical Education Center helped others feel like Cinderella just in time for prom season by giving previously worn prom and bridesmaid dresses a second life.
Students in the Career and Technical School Global Fashion program just wrapped up a Cinderella Prom Dress Event on the Albany Campus this week. Students from the campus, as well as the Maywood Academy and Airline Drive Academy, were able to purchase upcycled prom and bridesmaid dresses for just $5.
“I like helping people. It’s rewarding,” said Isaiah Smith, a Cohoes teen enrolled in the program.
Classmate Tahdiri Dickson agreed. “Some girls can’t afford to buy a dress so it feels good providing them a good alternative,” the Cohoes junior said.
Proceeds of the sale are being used to fund a charity on campus.
Fashion students have spent hours ironing, steaming and, in a few cases, making minor repairs to gently used dresses to make them ready.
Located on the CTE Albany Campus, students in the Global Fashion program study creative design and core business concepts and apply them to the world of fashion. They also learn about careers in fashion, merchandising, marketing, fashion drawing, textiles, how to use a sewing machine, foundation pattern making and sewing skills while taking part in work-based learning opportunities at area shopping malls to learn visual display and merchandising.
