Prevent “summer slide” with these free reading opportunities

Harmony Hill student reading“Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The effects of summer slide are cumulative, as researchers estimate that by the time a struggling reader reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two-year lag in reading achievement.

Thankfully, we have some great resources available to prevent a dip in reading levels over the summer months.

Cohoes Public Library

The Cohoes Public Library sponsors a summer reading club for students! The library also has a large collection of eBooks and audio books for kids and teens that can be accessed online for FREE with a library card.

NYSED Summer Reading at New York Libraries

The State Education Department’s Summer Reading at New York Libraries program gives readers unlimited access to more than 6,000 digital in the myON by Renaissance digital library. A mobile app is also available allowing up to 20 books to be downloaded and read while traveling or away from home.
