New security screening procedures at Cohoes High School

To further enhance the safety and security of our students and staff, Cohoes High School will soon implement a new metal detection scanner system at the main entrance.

Implementation timeline and roll-out:

  • Monday, March 23: Training and practice begins for CHS students and staff and will continue through Friday, March 27.
  • Monday, March 30: Official implementation begins.

What to expect:

  • School day entry: All students and visitors will be screened through the scanners upon entering the building during school hours.
  • Bags and belongings: backpacks and bags may be subject to further screening using handheld security wands.

Parent Information Night:

  • Families and caregivers are invited to come into the building to see the metal detection scanner system and ask questions during the evening of Monday, March 23 from 6pm-7pm. Cohoes Police, CHS administration and School Safety Officers will be on hand to answer questions.

This initiative is part of our proactive, layered approach to school safety, including other measures such as:

  • Cell phone-free environment (Yondr pouches)
  • Enhanced camera systems
  • Securely digital hall pass
  • Raptor badge system
  • Increased security personnel

In the future, we plan to use these devices at large scale events after school and on weekends. You will receive additional information prior to this implementation.
