Sixth graders take home top honors at CMS Spelling Bee

Three sixth graders took home the top awards at Cohoes Middle School’s Annual Spelling Bee that was held on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

L-R: Graham TeBordo, Amel Saed, Anaya Rubio and CMS Principal Mrs. Bradt.

The event was moderated by sixth grade teacher Julianna Niles and judges included sixth grade teacher Tracy Gresis, seventh grade teacher Lindsay Fontaine and eighth grade teacher Molly Flanagan.

Congratulations to the top three students whose final word was ‘easel’:

  • First place: Anaya Rubio
  • Second place: Amel Saed
  • Third place: Graham TeBordo

The middle school has been hosting an annual spelling bee for decades using the Scripps National Spelling Bee program, which celebrates academic achievement and enriches school communities.

There are many benefits of participating in a spelling bee, including having a deeper understanding of language, word origins and correct pronunciation. Also, children gain confidence and can learn to overcome the fear of public speaking.

“The Spelling Bee was a tremendous success and a true celebration of our students’ hard work, confidence, and intelligence. I couldn’t be prouder of the dedication and sportsmanship they displayed,” said CMS Principal Heather Bradt, adding that it was “remarkable” that the top three winners were all from the sixth grade.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this annual event!
