CHS students win awards at first Model UN conference

There is a new club at Cohoes High School that is quickly making its mark. The Model UN Club, led by Special Education Teacher Emily Frey, took part in its first conference at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday, Dec. 6, along with nine other Capital Region schools.

The students spent 11 hours learning about Model UN through workshops and partaking in committee work. The students engaged in debate and negotiation, and wrote policy papers while representing five countries: Ireland, Argentina, Qatar, Italy, and Canada.

Congratulations to juniors Luna Zook and Jack Abdul, who were awarded runner up for Best Policy Paper and Best Delegate, respectively. They also appeared on a podcast run by International Center of the Capital Region (ICCR) through UAlbany.

“This was a special first conference,” said Club Advisor Ms. Frey. “Students were able to build their confidence, bond and connect with one another. “I am really proud of them, not just for winning awards, but for taking a chance.”

Next up for the club is a conference at Syracuse University from January 9-10, focusing on the theme “Forging Unity in a Fragmented World.”
