Higher-risk sports on hold, per DOH guidelines

The Albany County Department of Health announced Wednesday that higher-risk winter sports will not begin on Feb. 1 due to the current COVID infection rate in the county. In a list of guidelines released by the DOH, one key metric reads “the 7-day rolling average percent positivity in the county, as calculated by NYSDOH, must be at or below 4 percent.” As of Friday, the 7-day rolling average for Albany County was at 6.9 percent.

Previously, Gov. Cuomo had announced that higher-risk sports could begin on Feb. 1 as long as it was allowed by local health departments.

The district will continue to monitor developments regarding higher-risk winter sports and communicate updates as more information becomes available.

Our boys and girls varsity bowling teams are currently mid-season, as bowling is considered a low-risk sport. Cross country (low-risk) and soccer (medium-risk) are scheduled to begin in March as part of the “fall 2” season.
