Dear CHS Parents and Students,
On Friday, May 1st, Governor Cuomo announced that schools in New York State will be closed for the remainder of the academic year. While this news was expected, it was nonetheless extremely disappointing. As we make plans for the remainder of the year, we will do our best to turn a negative situation into a positive one and create lasting memories for our students, especially the seniors. There are several items that we are currently working on, but please understand that the work is ongoing and constantly changing. As plans change, I will keep you updated. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at email@example.com or 237-9100, ext. 1404.
Locker Cleanout/Retrieval of Personal Items/Uniform Return
At the present time, we are working on a schedule and guidelines to allow students to retrieve personal items from their lockers and classrooms at the high school. In addition, we are working on a process to allow students to return textbooks and athletic uniforms. The schedule that we develop will take into account limiting the number of people in the building and maintaining social distancing.
Students who have ordered a yearbook may pick it up at the high school on Thursday, May 21.
Pick-up time by grade
Seniors may purchase/pick up their yearbooks from 10-11 a.m. and students in grades 9 through 11 may purchase/pick up their yearbooks from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
If you didn’t order a yearbook but still want one, there may be a few extra for purchase. The cost is $70 and cash only will be accepted. If you have a balance due you will receive a Schoology message indicating the balance. Again, cash only will be accepted. These are limited so first come first serve. If you have any questions please reach out to Mr. Ciarlone.
Seniors may pick up their class of 2020 shirts on Thursday, May 21 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. in the front of the high school. If you have any questions please reach out to your class advisors Mrs. Welch and Mrs. Ozols.
Several parents and teachers are in the process of purchasing yard signs for seniors. The hope is to have signs for every student in the class of 2020 by early June. If you are interested in purchasing a sign please contact Heather Bradt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Cap & Gown Orders
We are currently in the process of scheduling a date when seniors may pick up their cap & gown. Hopefully, this will be on a day during the first or second week in June. If you have not ordered a cap and gown, please fill out this google form. When a date is determined to pick up your cap and gown, you will need to bring your $42 with you. You may pay with cash or a check made out to “Class of 2020.” Please let Mrs. Abbott or Mrs. Ozols know if you have any questions.
NHS Induction Ceremony
We congratulate all of our students who were recently selected to the Cohoes High School National Honor Society. Students were selected based on their commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership and character. This spring’s NHS Induction Ceremony is postponed until students return in the fall. Date TBD.
This year’s symposium will be June 11 at 6 p.m. through a virtual platform (Details and link to follow at a later date). Students will pre-record their presentations, along with speeches from seniors and special guests.
Junior Scholars/Senior Awards Ceremony
Together with our career & counseling department, high school admin team and Cohoes Alumni Association, we are in the process of making decisions on who will be receiving awards. We are also finalizing plans and exploring ways to have these ceremonies.broadcast virtually. All awards will be mailed home to students. Dates TBD and details to follow.
We have formed a committee of students, parents, teachers, board members and administrators to meet and discuss alternate plans for graduation. We have considered many ideas but are focused on three separate events to celebrate this year’s graduation.
Cap & Gown Pick-Up (Date TBD)
Conferring of Diplomas (Date TBD)
Each graduating senior and a small number of family members will be invited to come to the high school auditorium at a specified time to cross the stage and receive their diploma. In addition, graduates and their immediate family members will have the opportunity to have their photos taken on stage. Finally, the national anthem, graduation speeches, musical performance, etc. will be pre-recorded and put together with the photos in a video that will be livestreamed the morning of the Graduation Car Parade.
Car Parade (Date TBD)
Assisted by the Cohoes PD and FD, graduates will participate in a celebratory car parade through the City of Cohoes. Students are encouraged to decorate their cars and show their spirit as they parade in cars through the city. Also, students are encouraged to wear their cap & gown as they would on graduation day. Details to follow.
Remember, these plans are ongoing and could change as more information becomes available. We will do our best to make sure graduation is memorable for our seniors while taking into account the health and well-being of everyone involved. If you have ideas or concerns please feel free to reach out to me at 237-9100, ext. 1404 or email@example.com.
