High School World Language Courses

French 1A

Prerequisite — None
1 Unit
Grade 9
This course is designed to meet the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) communication skills set by New York State standards for high school graduation. Coursework consists primarily of repetition of materials/concepts/vocabulary presented at the middle school level. Students who did not complete this requirement in middle school have the opportunity to complete the LOTE requirement by successfully completing the coursework presented in this class.

French 1

Prerequisite — Middle School French or French 1A 1 Unit
Grade 9
French 1 enables students to develop listening and speaking skills on such topics as school life, family life, illnesses and remedies, food and ordering food in a restaurant, the city and daily routines. Students also continue learning about the culture of the French speaking people and the similarities and differences between the customs of the French and Americans. Students review vocabulary and verb concepts acquired in middle school/French 1A while beginning to apply their knowledge of French to communicate effectively in written and spoken form. Listening and reading comprehension skills also improve during the course of this year.

French 2

Prerequisite — French 1 
1 Unit
Grade 10
In French 2, students build on the grammar and vocabulary learned in French 1. Students continue to improve reading and listening comprehension skills, while enhancing their competency in spoken and written French. Level of instruction progresses from beginner to intermediate level of foreign language acquisition.

HVCC French 3

Prerequisite — French 2 
1 Unit
Grade 11
Students continue to enhance listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while continuing to study intermediate-level concepts. Students must complete this course and pass the final examination in order to meet the requirements of completing a foreign language sequence leading to the Advanced Regents Diploma. A local examination is administered in lieu of a Regents exam. HVCC French 3 is the HVCC French 200 course for college credit.

HVCC French 4

Prerequisite — French 3 
1 Unit
Teacher recommendation Grade 12
Students must demonstrate an intermediate level of ability in reading, speaking, writing and listening to the French language. HVCC French 4 is the HVCC French 201 course for college credit.

Spanish 1A

Prerequisite — None
1 Unit
Grade 9
This course is designed to meet the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) communication skills set by New York State standards for high school graduation. Coursework consists primarily of repetition of materials/concepts/vocabulary presented at the middle school level. Students who did not complete this requirement in middle school (need to pass 2 years of a language AND the exam at the end of the 2nd year) have the opportunity to complete the LOTE requirement by successfully completing the coursework presented in this class.

Spanish 1

Prerequisite — Middle School Spanish or Spanish 1A 
1 Unit
Grade 9
Spanish 1 enables students to develop listening and speaking skills on such pertinent topics as school life, family life, illnesses and remedies, food and ordering food in a restaurant, the city and daily routines. Students review vocabulary and verb concepts acquired in middle school/Spanish 1A course, while beginning to apply their knowledge of Spanish to communicate effectively in written and spoken form. Listening and reading comprehension skills will also improve during the course of this year.

Spanish 2

Prerequisite — Spanish 1 
1 Unit
Grade 10
In Spanish 2, students will build on the grammar and vocabulary already learned in Spanish 1. Students continue to improve reading and listening comprehension skills, while enhancing their competency in spoken and written Spanish. The level of instruction progresses from beginner to intermediate level of foreign language acquisition. Students will learn a majority of Spanish grammar throughout this course.

HVCC Spanish 3

Prerequisite — Spanish 2 
1 Unit
Grade 11
This year students continue to enhance listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while continuing to study intermediate-level concepts. Students must complete this course and pass the final examination in order to meet the requirements of completing a foreign language sequence leading to the Advanced Regents Diploma. Final Evaluation: 65 or higher on Local Examination in lieu of a Regents exam. HVCC Spanish 3 is the HVCC Spanish 200 course for college credit.

HVCC Spanish 4

Prerequisite — Spanish 3, Teacher recommendation
1 Unit
Grade 12
Students will demonstrate an intermediate level of ability with respect to reading, speaking, writing and listening to the Spanish language. HVCC Spanish 4 is the HVCC Spanish 201 course for college credit.
