Eighth
graders move on to Cohoes High School
Cohoes Middle School's eighth-grade students
were promoted at a ceremony at CMS on Thursday, June 26.
The ceremony began with a processional, played
by the CMS Band, and included opening remarks by Courtney Dayter,
a member of the Class of 2008. Brittany Rock, Tori Russo and
Brianna Tarlo sang the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Showing students what life was
like…
In
May, Civil War reenactor Jim Hunt visited Cohoes Middle School
to give students a taste of what life would have been like for a
Civil War soldier.
Dressed in his uniform, Hunt showed students
what a soldier during that time period would have carried with
him, what he would have had to eat and talked about how grueling
life would have been.

Students make quilts for
residents at The Eddy
Students
in Erin Koons' class are making special gifts for residents of
The Eddy.
For several weeks, the students have been making fleece
blankets, which they are hoping to deliver to the residential
facility sometime before the school year ends.

Choosing careers
On
Wednesday, April 30, Cohoes Middle School students learned about
cooking, managing, banking and fundraising, all during the
school day at the annual Career Fair.
Professionals from the area visited the middle
school to talk to students about their own career paths and to
describe their jobs, giving students insight into different
professions that they may want to pursue.

Odyssey of the Mind team
finishes third during its first-ever competition
The
Cohoes Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team placed third, out
of 7 strong teams in the division, in their first-ever Odyssey
of The Mind competition at Mohonasen High School on Saturday,
March 1. More than 82 school districts were represented at this
year's competition, a creative problem-solving event that
emphasizes teamwork.

food drive will bring food to hungry families
The
Cohoes Middle School National Junior Honor Society collected
nearly 400 items as part of their first ever food drive, which
was held from Jan. 7-25.

Students prepare for the
holidays with a winter concert
Cohoes
Middle and High School musicians performed in the annual
concert. The band and chorus students performed separately first
and the concert ended with a grand finale performance by the
entire grades 6-12 music department.
Hello? Brazil? It’s
Cohoes!
Twenty
years ago, students wrote letters to pen pals in other towns,
states and even countries. But today, with the click of a mouse,
Cohoes Middle School students are chatting, face-to-face, with
"pen pals" in Brazil.
Through the C.A.S.E. (Cohoes After School
Enrichment) program at the middle school, Tony Rivera has
connected students at the Mentes Brillantes (Brilliant Minds)
School in Brazilian children in Campos do Jordão,
Sao Paulo, Brazil.

and Her True Life Adventures, based on a book by Lois Lowry.

Revolutionary War soldier
comes to Cohoes
A Revolutionary War re-enactor visited Mr. Wasserman's Social
Studies class at the Cohoes Middle School on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Robert Mulligan gave a talk about the war and what it was like
to be a Revolutionary War soldier. He talked about the clothing,
weapons, and food the soldiers used during the war.

Social studies students create
PowerPoints
Seventh-grade students in David Wasserman's social studies
class recently completed a unit on the Revolutionary War. As
part of the class, students completed a Power Point presentation
on the Revolutionary War Era.
Students chose their own topics, researched them
online and in the library and finally, created presentations and
showed them to the class.

Students share songs at
Character Education conference
On
Nov. 7, about 30 Cohoes Middle School students in the
sixth-grade chorus and CASE students sang several songs at a
Character Education Conference at The Sage Colleges Albany
Campus.
Teachers have a lesson in project-based learning
During
a staff development day in November, the Cohoes Middle School
staff had their own lesson in project-based learning.

Math, science and robotics!
The
students in Alison Craver's enrichment class at CMS are not only
honing their math and science skills, they're building
functional robots.
As a group, the students follow Power Point
slides that demonstrate each step, students are crafting their
robots. Once finished, the students will use computer software
to program them to travel specific distances or make noises.

D.J. the deejay brings
music, fun and important lessons to CMS
On Thursday, Oct. 25, KissFM broadcasted from
the Cohoes Middle School cafeteria. Not only was the radio
station broadcasting tunes the students enjoyed, they were
broadcasting a message about the dangers of smoking.

Red Ribbon Week at Cohoes Middle School
In
celebration of Red Ribbon Week, Student Council coordinated Red
Ribbon Day at Cohoes Middle School on Oct. 23.
At grade-level assemblies held throughout the
day, various speakers talked to students about the importance of
being alcohol free.

Cleans up
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, students in the CMS CASE
program cleaned Lansing Park. The group raked so many leaves
that they ran out of bags before they finished raking!
Fall begins with the Pumpkin
Festival
On
Friday, Oct. 12, Cohoes families enjoyed the Pumpkin Festival at
the Cohoes Farmers' Market and Cohoes Middle School.
The festival, which was sponsored by Youth
Advisory Board, CMS PASS, Kiwanis Club, Farmers' Market
Committee and the City of Cohoes, included games and relay races
fall food and beverages, karaoke, a 50/50 raffle, a magician,
face painting, a balloonist, hay rides and a bonfire.

Principal's Roundtable a
success
On Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, the Cohoes Middle
School held its first Principal's Roundtable. The Roundtable
discussion is a way for Mr. Perry, Mr. Martinelli and Mr.
Kolakowski to discuss issues with the community in a small
setting. The discussions are held once a quarter and include a
short agenda from Mr. Perry, as well as time to discuss any
topics that community members would like to discuss regarding
the middle school.
The sessions last approximately 90 minutes and the
administrators supply bagels and coffee for those who stop by.

High Energy Jugglers come to
Cohoes Middle School
On
Friday, Sept. 28, the High Energy Jugglers came to Cohoes Middle
School to perform for students.
The brothers, who awed the students with their
juggling tricks, also talk about achieving their dream of
becoming professional jugglers, coping with adversity, building
up self esteem and encouragement.
District takes proactive
approach to MRSA infection prevention
Recently, there has been some media attention
over MRSA infections, a type of infection caused by the
bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
Some cases have been reported in Saratoga County.
District officials are taking a proactive approach to
ensure the health of students and staff.
Most importantly, students and staff at each school are being
encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water, especially
before eating, after using sports facilities or the restroom. In addition, school officials are making sure
administrators, teachers, school nurses, coaches
and the custodial staff have protective information available
for themselves and to share with the school population. The
importance of sanitation is being reinforced with the cleaning
staff, and special emphasis is being placed on physical
education and sports equipment, locker rooms and common surfaces
and areas.

and conversion in class, and these ideas were reinforced through
the games.

The middle school has a new Drama
Club, which is planning to put on a play this year.
The club is being run by Tony Rivera, one of the
founders of the Cohoes Music Hall.

On
Thursday, March 27, three Cohoes Middle School eighth-graders
presented at Russell Sage College's Sixth Annual Youth
Leadership Summit, sponsored by the Academy for Character
Education at the Sage College in Troy. 
The
annual Cohoes Middle School student exhibition, "Road to
Success," was held on Thursday, March 27 at Cohoes Middle School.
The third annual Cohoes Middle School Talent
Show will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the CMS
gymnasium. Admission is $3 and all are welcome!
In
October, Cohoes Middle School students in Ms. Bailey's Grade 7
Enrichment class participated in the Metric Olympics.
