Middle School students track
their way to historical points in Cohoes
Using
GPS navigation systems, Cohoes Middle School students in the
Summer Learning Academy got lessons in using the high-tech
devices, as well as often overlooked historical points in the
city.
"The goal was to get students out into the
community and to teach them some history about the place
where they live," said Cohoes Middle School Assistant Principal
Dan Martinelli. "I think it went well."

Summer Eating Program in the
Cohoes City Schools
The Summer Eating Program runs from July 7
through Aug. 15, 2008. All children ages 1-18 eat free. Any
child can come to Page Avenue School or Abram Lansing School for
breakfast and Abram Lansing School for lunch. Applications and
proof of eligibility are not needed.

September

City Schools will rise slightly, beginning in September 2008.

Summer dates for marching band
Summer Drill will he held from 6-9 p.m. on Aug.
12-14 and 19-21.
Upcoming parades include the Soccer Parade on
Sept. 6; the Uncle Sam Parade on Sept. 7; Homecoming on
Sept. 27; the Halloween Parade on Oct. 31; and the Veterans' Day
Parade on Nov. 11.
The next Band Booster Meeting will be held Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. at
the high school. New parents are welcome to attend.

participate in walk/run for autism
Parents, staff and community members are invited
to participate in the Fifth Annual Autism Society Walk and 5K
Run. The event begins on Sept. 21, 2008, at 8 a.m. at Central

Commencement held at Cohoes High
School
One-hundred
and thirty-five students graduated from Cohoes High Schools on
Saturday, June 28, at the annual commencement exercises, held at
CHS.
The ceremony began with the singing of the "Star-Spangled
Banner" and the CHS "Alma Mater," followed by several guest
speakers.

Capital Project passes
Voters in the Cohoes City School District
approved the capital project on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.
The capital project passed by a margin of 293
voting yes and 131 voting no.
The land purchase near Van Schaick Grade School,
which was a separate proposition, passed 335 to 106.

Cohoes Farmers' Market first
Farm to City Fest a success!

by students in the Cohoes City Schools was featured in the
city's first Farm to City Fest, which was held on June 27.
The event, held on Remsen Street in Cohoes, included
a sidewalk art contest for kids,
horse-drawn wagon rides, farm animals, cooking demonstrations,
sheep shearing, refreshments, music and more.

Girls softball team finishes
season 16-11
The
Cohoes High School girls softball team finished its 2008 season
with a 16-11 record and a win of the Section II Class B
Championship.
The team advanced to the state semifinals on June 14, but could
not hold off Fredonia and played hard, but lost the tough game 9-6.
The girls were honored at Cohoes City Hall on Monday, June 16 by
Cohoes Mayor John McDonald.
Hannah Montana star Mitchel
Musso visits Harmony Hill School
Mitchel
Musso, who plays Oliver Oken on the hit TV show "Hannah
Montana," visited Harmony Hill School on Wednesday, June 4, for
a special assembly. Musso plays the loyal best friend of Miley
and Lilly on the Disney Channel series.
Musso's visit was arranged after second-grade student Samantha
Charbonneau won the "Cool at School!" contest through
Verizon Wireless. After her entry was chosen out of thousands, Musso came to school for the assembly, run by Radio Disney
D.J. Phil N Good, and had a pizza party with
her class.

Two Cohoes schools named "High
Performing/Gap Closing" by state
Two Cohoes City schools – Van Schaick Grade
School and Harmony Hill School - were among 1,759 public
schools, 19 charter schools and 288 public school districts
named "High Performing/Gap Closing" under the No Child Left
Behind Act, according to a list released in May by the New York
State Department of Education.

Robert K. Libby appointed
Superintendent of Cohoes City Schools
Current assistant superintendent to assume
post June 9
Following
a two-month search process, Robert K. Libby was appointed to the
position of Superintendent of Schools of the Cohoes City School
District by the Board of Education at its May 21 meeting.
Libby, who has served the district for the last
15 years as the assistant superintendent for business and
operations, brings with him a deep knowledge of the Cohoes
schools and community, as well as strong academic leadership
skills.

District hosts picnic for ELL
families
Every
year the ESL Department of the Cohoes City School District
organizes picnics for the parents of ELL students, and gives the
parents a chance to meet the teachers, find out about state
tests and talk to each other.
This year's picnic, held on April 29, was a true
celebration of the diversity of Cohoes. Nearly 20 parents and 45
children attended the picnic and enjoyed original and unique
food: Ukrainian golubci (staffed cabbage), Sudanese falafel
(fried vegetarian dish), Afghani deserts, a huge Ukrainian cake
and "American" food - pizza!
