tells students their goals are reachable

NEWS Sports Director Rich Becker knew since he was young that he
wanted to be a sportscaster, he told Page Avenue students during
a presentation in May.
"No goal is attainable on your own," he told
students, acknowledging that his family and friends helped him
attain his goal.

Learning to bank young and bank
smart
On April 8, 2008, a representative from Capital
Communications Federal Credit Union, Carrie Tonner, visited the
students at Page Avenue School. She introduced the students to
"Bank Young. Bank Smart. (Age 13 – 18)!"

An
adventure in learning
Earlier this year students from the Page Avenue School attended
the half-day workshop called Project Adventure at the LaSalle
School of Albany.

Animal Control Officer talks
with Page Avenue students
Cohoes
Animal Control Officer Jerry Oliver visited Page Avenue School
on Thursday, March 27 to talk with students about his job and a
potential future career.
"It's a very interesting job," Oliver told
students.

District to begin radon
mitigation in three classrooms
Three classrooms at the Cohoes City School
District's Page Avenue School recently tested above the
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) guideline for radon.
This testing was part of a routine air-quality check conducted
as part of the Cohoes City School District's health and safety
program.

Insight into life
When
she was 12, Patty Eisenhandler woke up one morning blind.
"I thought God hated me and he struck me blind
in the middle of the night," she told the Page Avenue School
students who listened intently to her story. "I could read the
night before. It was a lot like a nightmare."

Finances 101 at Page Avenue
On
Tuesday, Nov. 20, Page Avenue students got a glimpse of how
money can be a benefit – or a detriment.
Through a rousing game of Jeopardy, two
representatives from the federal credit union SEFCU taught
students about credit and credit reports, budgeting, identity
theft and their perception of money.

Perseverance is key
With the message that perseverance is the key to
success, Chef James Haas came to visit Page Avenue on Friday,
Nov. 2.
Haas, a culinary arts instructor at the Capital
Region Career and Technical School, asked students what their
goals were, and emphasized that they needed a plan in life.

Page Avenue Open House
The Page Avenue School Select Studies and ALP
programs held an Open House on Wednesday evening, Oct. 24.
Parents and students were treated to refreshments, a video
presentation of students at work on a typical school day,
displays of their artwork and examples of completed class
assignments. The teachers and principal conducted one-on-one
discussions with parents regarding their child's progress, and a
Round Table discussion about the goals and objectives of these
two alternative programs.
District takes proactive
approach to MRSA infection prevention
Recently, there has been some media attention
over MRSA infections, a type of infection caused by the
bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
Some cases have been reported in Saratoga County.
District officials are taking a proactive approach to
ensure the health of students and staff.
Most importantly, students and staff at each school are being
encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water, especially
before eating, after using sports facilities or the restroom. In addition, school officials are making sure
administrators, teachers, school nurses, coaches
and the custodial staff have protective information available
for themselves and to share with the school population. The
importance of sanitation is being reinforced with the cleaning
staff, and special emphasis is being placed on physical
education and sports equipment, locker rooms and common surfaces
and areas.

team players bring a message of encouragement
Three
members of the Siena College mens basketball team and an
assistant coach spoke to students in the ALP class at Page
Avenue School, bringing a message of encouragement and the
importance of education.
"You guys need to finish school," said senior
guard Tay Fisher, a team captain.

Students learn about the stage
On
Sept. 28, co-founder of the Cohoes Music Hall Tony Rivera spoke
to students at the Page Avenue School.
Rivera taught the students about the theater—all
of the roles that go into preparing and presenting a production,
including light and sound technicians, costume designers, set
builders, musicians, actors and other jobs.
