New York State GED Testing Information
The Cohoes City School District is an Approved High School
Equivalency Preparation Program
An Approved Alternative High School Equivalency
Preparation Program is one for students under age 19 operated
only by a public school district or the local board of education
or BOCES in accordance with Part 100.7 of the Commissioner's
Regulations and approved on an annual basis by the State
Education Department.
Under Commissioner's Regulations 100.7 (1) (XVIII): "Students
preparing to take the high school equivalency examination shall
not be referred to that test unless they demonstrate readiness
as indicated by tests approved by the Commissioner."
Students that wish to pursue a GED through the Cohoes City
School District will first be required to take the Test of Adult
Basic Education (TABE) test to determine test readiness.
-
A score of 9.0 grade-level equivalency on
the TABE is required to begin GED work.
-
Most students with an entry score of 9.0
will easily be ready to take the Official GED Test after
100-150 instructional hours.
-
Any student who scores less than 9.0 on the
TABE test will enter a pre-GED program until their test
scores are raised to 9.0 or higher, a process which can
easily take one or two academic years.
-
Pre-GED and GED classes are two and a half
hours a day.
-
After the student achieves a 9.0 on the TABE
test, he or she can enter the GED program and expect to
complete it with at least the 100-150 instructional hours.
