butterfly vote in

The winner in a statewide vote by students in grades 3 through 5
for what the New York State butterfly should be has been named:
the Red Spotted Purple/White Admiral butterfly.
Harmony
Hill students in grades 3 through 5 participated in the
voting, which was sparked by a 10-year-old girl from Cortlandt,
Karina Franke.
The contest, sponsored by New York State
Assemblywoman Sandy Galef (D-Ossining), gave students the
chance to vote for one of five butterflies that are seen around
the state. The butterflies nominated include: the Black
Swallowtail, the Karner Blue Butterfly, Milbert's Tortoiseshell,
the Mourning Cloak and the Red Spotted Purple/White Admiral. The
Karner Blue butterfly, which came in second place, is
endangered.
In total, about 35,000 students from across the state
voted in the contest. |
