Cohoes CSD Board of Education candidates on the ballot May 16

April 27, 2017—On Tuesday, May 16 Cohoes City School District voters will select two members of the Board of Education in addition to voting on the $41.8 million proposed 2017-18 school budget. Board members volunteer to serve unpaid, three-terms beginning on July 1.

This year, three candidates are running for two open seats. Candidates, in the order they will appear on the ballot, are:


Helen AnnelyHelen Annely is seeking her first term on the board. She has been a district resident for seven years and is a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Names. Ms. Annely is the administrator for the Director and Associate Director for the New York State Department of Health’s Division of Nutrition. She has been an active member of the Harmony Hill PTA for the past three years, serving as vice president last year and current president. She volunteers at multiple health clinics in the Capital Region within the Department of Health, including Red Cross blood drives, flu vaccination clinics and breast cancer screenings. She volunteers regularly with the Cohoes Fire Department, where her husband, Peter, is a firefighter. They have one daughter who attends
Harmony Hill.



Margaret GillerMargaret Giller is seeking her first full term on the board, after being elected to fill a vacant seat last year. She has been a district resident for 38 years and is a graduate of Cohoes High School. Mrs. Giller is chief information officer and district data coordinator for the Mechanicville City School District. On the board, Mrs. Giller serves on the audit, technology and safety committees. She also served on the transportation and grade weighting/class rank committees this year. She is currently president of the Cohoes High School wrestling and baseball booster clubs and a member of the football and track booster clubs. Mrs. Giller is also a member of the Polish American Association. She and her husband, Paul, have four sons. Three are graduates of Cohoes and one currently attends Cohoes High School.



Vincent BaranVincent Baran is seeking his second term on the board. He has been a district resident for 51 years, is a graduate of Cohoes High School, and holds an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Baran is a senior engineering materials analyst with the New York State Department of Transportation. On the school board, Mr. Baran served as president for one year. He also served on both the budget and audit committees. He serves on the board of directors for St. Michael’s Community Center, and is assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 277. Mr. Baran is also treasurer of the CHS track booster club. He and his wife, Jill, have two children—one at the middle school and one at the high school.
