Looking to earn your GED?

Sept. 13, 2010 – The Cohoes City School District in cooperation with Capital Region BOCES is offering a FREE General Equivalency Diploma Program beginning this September.

The GED program is open to all students age 17 or older who lack a high school diploma and are no longer enrolled in school.

"We hope that offering this program to the community will give individuals who did not complete high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent diploma, so they can further their education and career," said Assistant Superintendent for Education Services Peggy O'Shea.

The program, which offers free instruction and materials, is funded through a grant from the Employment Preparation and Education and Workforce Investment Act.

The students will be given an initial assessment to determine their needs and reading level. After that, an individualized education plan will be developed to accommodate each student. Instruction will then be provided by a certified teacher in the five areas of study to prepare for the GED exam. Those five areas of student are: Language Arts – Writing; Social Studies; Science; Language Arts – Reading; and Mathematics.

Classes will begin Sept. 20 in room 110 at Cohoes Middle School, which is located off of Columbia Street in Cohoes. Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Enrollment is continuous, so students may register at any time by simply attending a class.
