CHS athletes get "Magic" lessons from a legend

Inspiration was the name of the game earlier this month when 10 Cohoes High School athletes traveled to UAlbany to hear Earvin "Magic" Johnson talk about his life and career in basketball and in business. True to his reputation, Johnson was not at a loss for words when it came to offering motivational wisdom to the students, all of whom intend to play varsity basketball this winter. The CHS students were accompanied by Coach Jeff Huneau.

Johnson, who spoke as part of the university's World Within Reach speaker series, discussed his success playing in the NBA and his accomplishments in business and philanthropy, despite a diagnosis of HIV in 1991.

"Change the world. Be ready. Don't be unprepared. If you don't dream it you can't become it," Johnson told his audience."Believe in yourself, set your goals high, and go after them. If you believe in your strategy and if you believe in yourself ... you've got to keeping knocking down those doors."

Johnson added, "My parents said that education is the key. Anything that I was going to become, anything that I wanted to do, it all had to be through education."

Coach Huneau and the student-athletes used the evening to strengthen their Cohoes Tiger pride by having dinner together downtown at Joe's Tavern. In discussing the evening, Coach Huneau said, "It turned our to be a great bonding event and a valuable learning experience. Magic motivated my players to be better players but more importantly, better people and better men."
