More MAP testing for grades 4-8 to begin January 30

The new MAP assessment tests will be administered in the elementary schools and at CMS during a second round of testing, January 30-February 17. Students in grades 4 through 8 will be tested in Mathematics, Reading and Language Usage. The new student assessment tool aimed at improving individual student achievement is being administered three times a year to make it easier for teachers to benchmark each student's instructional level and measure academic growth.

Each test, taken on a computer, requires approximately one hour to complete. The MAP tests for ninth graders are being administered during Regents Week.

The MAP tests, created by Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) are not intended to replace state testing administered annually, but instead complement those tests by providing a tailored, year-round assessment of each individual student. This is especially important as our schools – and all schools throughout New York –transition to the Common Core curriculum standards. All New York state curriculum and testing will be aligned with the Common Core by 2014. In Cohoes, teachers in every classroom are working hard to provide a smooth transition to these promising new standards of education. Cohoes is one of 17 local school districts to recently implement MAP testing.

MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. For instance, if a student performs well in answering the math test questions, subsequent questions will adapt and become more difficult as the student continues the test. Conversely, a student who struggles on the math test will receive subsequent questions that are geared toward that student’s expected level of progress. As a result, each student will have the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

Parents of students in grades four through nine will receive a report detailing their child’s progress three times a year. To learn more about the new MAP tests>>
