CHS students are subjects of district's "Good News"

District Good News photoAs it does every month, the Board of Education took time during its recent business meeting to recognize students who have made exemplary contributions to the school district and the community at large. This month, CHS student Tyneesha Evans was honored for volunteer work at Thanksgiving on behalf of Equinox in Albany. Also recognized were student representatives of the National Honor Society, who recently began offering weekly peer tutoring sessions.

In a display of holiday good will, Ms. Evans, a CHS junior who attends culinary classes at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Tech Center, traveled by CDTA bus more than an hour to reach the Equinox project at the Empire State Plaza. The annual effort provides a hot holiday meal to thousands of homeless and impoverished families in the Capital Region. With her chef/teacher, Ms. Evans carved turkey and ham in preparation for the big meal.

"We began by cutting up about 1,000 pounds of turkey," said Ms. Evans. "Then, we carved some ham. About 800 pounds of ham. It was fun!"

High school principal Joe Rajczak shared with the board just how special Ms. Evans' effort had been when he recounted her instructor telling him that of the dozens of students he had asked to join him in the Equinox effort, Tyneesha was the only student who showed up.

"As she does most days, Tyneesha set a great example for her peers," said Principal Rajczak.

Also recognized for helping their school peers were members of the National Honor Society, who have recently begun providing  weekly tutoring sessions in the Cohoes schools. Representing the group were CHS juniors Emily Daigneault, Kaylee Urban and Jenna Colozza. Teacher and NHS advisor Jennifer Saddlemire introduced the students to the board.
