Walk like an Egyptian through the Harmony Hill bazaarEgyptian bazaar at Harmony Hill

This week, third graders at Harmony Hill continued their colorful tradition of recreating an Egyptian bazaar in the hallways of their school. With colorful scarves, jewels, and clothing for "sale", the students welcomed their schoolmates with tasty cornbread and oranges as they surveyed the goods.

Dressed as very small Egyptian merchants, the students recreated the atmosphere of an Egyptian market with sights and sounds of vendors hawking their goods and shoppers bartering for deals. Around their necks, each third grader wore a "cartouche" that spelled out their names in hieroglyphs.

The bazaar has become a third grade tradition at Harmony Hill, spanning nearly 20 years. It is the culmination of the unit of study on Egypt that is part of the curriculum exploring communities around the world. The students learn about where people settled and lived; they learn about the social, political, economic and cultural elements of different communties; and discuss important issues and historic events that have shaped civilization.
