Cohoes food service will feature regional farms' produce throughout the fall

Photo of fruits and vegetables.Sept. 30, 2010 - Beginning in September, the district's food service program, through Advanced Meal, will be offering fresh local produce.

To begin an official New York State Farms to School Program, our local Food Service Director Brian Nolan has been working with his produce distributor, Carioto Produce and Seafood in Green Island, to identify regional farms that can provide produce to the schools.

"Making sure we buy local produce does not add extra costs, ensures we are supporting farmers in our region and gives students the opportunity to enjoy fresh, healthy foods," Nolan said.

The menus will feature items such as peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower or corn on the cob, and students will be able to try the vegetables as a side dish, or taste a sample.

So far, the response has been positive, Nolan said. Most importantly, however, he said he is happy to provide students with the opportunity to taste fresh, local fruits and vegetables.
