Students enjoy jazz music by performers from New Orleans

Photo of performers.Nov. 4, 2010 - Abram Lansing students had the opportunity to hear the world-renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band in concert at The College of Saint Rose.

The trip, which was sponsored by a local bank, featured Ben Jaffe (Creative Director of Preservation Hall/tuba player/son of the Hall's founders) presenting a multi-media presentation and playing the bass. In addition, Charlie Gabriel played the clarinet. The pair taught students from Cohoes, as well as from other local schools, about rhythm, syncopation and call and response music during their hour-long presentation.

The band has traveled worldwide spreading its mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans jazz. The building that lends its name has housed many businesses over the years including a tavern during the War of 1812, a photo studio and an art gallery. The first band began touring in 1963, and for many years there were several bands successfully touring the nation under the name “Preservation Hall.” Many of the charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early 20th century, such as Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bunk Johnson.

Students enjoyed the music, Photo of performers.including When All the Saints, as well as many other classic pieces.
