May
24 - On Monday, May 23, Cohoes Middle School students were treated
to a visit from a group of Civil War re-enactors, led by Jim Hunt.
This is the fifth such visit to the middle school by the group over
the past few years. The re-enactors were dressed in Civil War
soldier clothing. They also had many artifacts for the students to
see and touch.
Jim's group brought in "hard tack" for the students to taste. This was a food, consisting of flour and water, was eaten regularly by Civil War soldiers. The presentations were focused on the life of a typical Civil War soldier, but the highlight of the visit was when the men fired their weapons. The loud bang and smell of burning sulfur made the Civil War come to life for the students. It was truly an experience they will never forget.
