May 17, 2011 - Voters of the Cohoes City School District today
approved a $38,209,066 budget for the 2011-12 school year by a vote
of 646-374. The budget, which includes a total spending increase of
1.69 percent over the current fiscal year, will result in an
estimated tax rate increase of 1.85 percent.
The approved budget, which had been unanimously adopted by the Board of Education in April, requires a 2.4 percent tax levy increase of $316,532. It will also cut 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff positions across the district.
Residents of the city also elected four members of the Board of Education. Chris Briggs, who received the most number of votes, and Anne Marie Hume, who received the second highest number of votes, will serve full three-year terms; and Laurie Rizzo and Matt Nolin, who finished third and fourth, respectively, will serve partial one-year terms.
“The Board of Education worked for many months to craft a budget
that could maintain quality instruction and programming without
shifting an undue burden to local taxpayers,” said Superintendent
Robert K. Libby. “This was particularly daunting in light of state
aid reductions and swelling mandated and contractual costs. I am
pleased we have achieved public consensus and can move forward in
meeting the needs of Cohoes students.”
