Cohoes teachers and staff dress down, raise funds for disaster relief

Mar 28 - On Wednesday, March 23, teachers and staff from several Cohoes schools relaxed the dress code, wearing jeans and opening wallets as they took part in Jeans for Japan, a fundraising effort that raised $1,033 for disaster relief in the earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged country. The effort was spearheaded by the Abram Lansing Character Education Committee.

Money collected by the teachers and staff at Abram Lansing, Van Schaick, Harmony Hill and Cohoes High School will be used to purchase a Shelter Box from ShelterBox USA.ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.

The Cohoes staff raised enough money to buy a complete Shelter Box, which supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with tents and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. Check out what is in the box by clicking here. See what's in the box.

ShelterBox also connect donors directly with the people they are helping. By giving each box a unique number, and carefully recording where each box goes, the schools' donors will have the opportunity to track their box to its final destination through the ShelterBox website. Once the ShelterBox has been shipped, the Cohoes schools will be added to ShelterBox USA Roll of Honor.

Students also got into the act during Jeans for Japan day in Cohoes by writing letters to Japanese students, letting their overseas counterparts them they are being thought of here in upstate New York.
