When Harmony Hill third graders launched an effort last fall to
support the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society through recycling,
they embarked on what teachers predicted would be a year-long campaign
to collect enough bottles and cans to equal a $1,000 donation to the
animal shelter. At last count, it appears they will reach – and
surpass -- their goal in only a matter of months.
After learning about the number of wildlife affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, students in Mr. Brooks’, Mrs. Beaury’s, and Mrs. Pilawski’s classes decided in November they wanted to do something to help animals. Guided by their teachers, the students combined their lessons in conservation and recycling with their desire to help the local animal shelter care for abandoned and abused animals.

Each week, the students collect, sort and tally bottles and cans that are brought to the school. The bottles and cans are to be donated Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. Each bottle and can be redeemed by the Humane Society for 8 cents, 3 cents above the 5 cents for bottles and cans redeemed by the public.
The classes will be having a bottle drive in April, just before Spring Break. Parents, staff and community members are encouraged to rinse and hold onto their returnable/refundable bottles and cans and bring them to the bottle drive in April.
The Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society has been providing shelter for lost, abused and unwanted animals since 1887. The animal care facility is the largest in the Capital Region, receiving an average of over 6,000 animals per year, including cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters, snakes, birds, iguanas, fish, horses, livestock and even llamas.
