Jan. 26, 2011 - Thirteen youngsters with life-threatening illnesses
will be headed to Super Bowl XLV thanks in part to the effort of
elementary level students in Cohoes, who participated last month in a
holiday fundraising effort sponsored by the Make-a-Wish Foundation and
Macy's.
According to Make-a-Wish, wish recipients will be traveling from 10 U.S. states, including New York, to attend the game. The young football fans will be in Texas on Sunday, Feb.6 to cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers.
On Friday Dec. 10, nearly 1,000 students from all three of the elementary schools in Cohoes worked to make “someone else’s wish come true” as part of National Believe Day. The students wrote letters to Santa and then delivered them to the store on Monday, Dec. 13. Macy’s committed to donating $1 for each letter it receives, up to $1 million to the Make A Wish Foundation. This year, 1,001,002 letters were collected.
Most faculty and staff in the district’s elementary schools participated by wearing "I Believe" shirts, which they had designed, and students at each building were treated to a viewing of The Polar Express for joining the holiday effort.
