Lessons from the postman
The
Wee Deliver mail service at Harmony Hill School got a special
visit from a real mail carrier in March.
Mike Marcil, a mail carrier in Watervliet, talked
to the fourth grade students in Joann Walters class, about the
mail delivery service the students provide for the school, and
his daily job.
The fourth graders' service mirrors the U.S. Postal Service in
several ways, although it doesn't handle the magnitude of mail
and students don't encounter as many problems as an actual mail
carrier might on the street.
Marcil talk about his clothing, his route and several
interesting experiences he has had as a mail carrier. He
explained that he gets an allowance to buy clothes each year and
the different ways he dresses to ensure he is cool on warm days
and warm and dry on cold, rainy or snowy days.
"It's enjoyable to walk around and be out on my own," Marcil
said, when a student asked him what the best part of his job is.
The strangest thing he said he has encountered was a dog that
shattered a glass storm door while he was on the porch. Luckily,
neither Marcil nor the dog were hurt!
