High School is embracing a new partnership with Capital
Communications Federal Credit Union, which recently moved into

Honored at City Hall
The
Cohoes High School girls basketball team was honored by Cohoes
Mayor John McDonald on Wednesday, May 7 for its achievements as
Colonial Council Co-Champions this past season.

state bowling championship
Cohoes
High School seniors Paul and Joe Peterson won first place the
New York State Bowling Championship, held in Syracuse, the
weekend of May 4-5. Their win was the first time a Cohoes team
won.

attend scholars' recognition dinner for the sixth time
At
the Scholars' Recognition Dinner on May 7 Cohoes High School
Class of 2008 Valedictorian Meagan Mnich will be recognized.
As part of the dinner, Mnich chose CHS science
teacher Dr. Cheryl Isles to be honored as a teacher that has had
a significant and beneficial impact on her.

A
few months shy of graduation, the Cohoes High School Class of
2008 participated in the first annual Senior Service Day, as
part of Global Youth Service Day, on Friday, April 25, 2008.
Throughout the day, nearly all of the seniors in the Class of
2008 were at a variety of locations around the city cleaning,
planting and giving their time to the greater community.

The

a game at a game on Doubleday Field in in Cooperstown in April.

Sixth Annual Cohoes High School
Student Art Show going on now!
The sixth annual Cohoes High School student show
at the Visitor Center on Remsen Street is taking place now
through the first week of May from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents
are encouraged to stop in to see the work of our students. The
visitor's center is on the ground floor of the Cohoes Music
Hall.
In April four students were recognized during a
reception. Those students include: for the People's Choice
award: Lindsey Grudecki and Vanessa Bressette, for the Best 2-D:
Jenna Deo and for the Best 3-D: Nina Curtain.

CHS mock trial team prepares for
third round in state competition
Yuliya Sundul details the night she went running
and was hit by a car, carefully describing her story and making
sure to interject telling details that the defense may not want
the judge to hear.
While her story is part of a mock trial, and nothing she
actually went through, she practices telling it with accuracy,
hoping to give the Cohoes High School mock trial team an edge at
its upcoming trial.

CHS student honored at state
science competition
Cohoes
High School senior Meagan Mnich received third place/honors in
her category of General Biology & Environmental Science at the
New York State Eastern Section Junior Science and Humanities
Symposium (JSHS) on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Meagan has been a member of the Science Research
course at Cohoes High School for three years. The course, taught
by Dr. Cheryl Isles, is a three-year course that focuses
mainly on independent study in which each student chooses their
own topic to research for the duration of the course.

All about pi
On
Friday, March 14, students at Cohoes High School had their fill
of pie. While some of it was in the form of apple and cherry,
the rest of the day’s activities centered on the mathematical
constant, "pi."

Junior Prom date changed
As a result of a scheduling conflict with the
SAT Examination, the date for the Junior Prom has been changed.
The prom will now be held Friday, May 30 at the Crossgates
Banquet House from 7 to 11 p.m. The Cohoes High School
After-Prom Party will be held from 11:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on
Saturday, May 31.
Article A makes its Cohoes debut
The
New Jersey-based pop band Article A made its Cohoes debut in
February, playing several songs and talking with students about
their journey through the music business.

Cohoes Mayor awards students for
teamwork
Cohoes
Mayor John T. McDonald III presented the Team Work Awards to
Cohoes students at the Cohoes High Basketball Game on Saturday,
Feb. 9 at the Cohoes High School Gym. The award,
courtesy of the Cohoes Mayoral Foundation, is presented to
nominated students of the various high school sports programs
who best represent good sportsmanship. The award is also
supported by the Cohoes Character Counts Committee.

The Cohoes High School newspaper, PawPrints, has
a new look this year.
The publication, which comes out several times
each year, is a student-run newspaper. It focuses on including
something about all of the high school's activities.

Cohoes player sets Section
II and national record
Tuesday,
Jan. 7 was a night for the record books for Cohoes High School
girls' basketball senior guard Courtney Galuski.
Galuski set a Section II record for the most
three-point shots in a game. She
hit 15 three-point goals, leading Cohoes to a 91-36 win over Schalmont on
her team's home turf.

participate in employability course
Beginning in February, students in the
Troy, Lansingburgh and Cohoes school districts who are VESID
eligible with a teacher recommendation, will participate in a
10-week employability-training course once per week at Hudson
Valley Community College.

The
physical education staff at Cohoes High School have chosen
seniors Laryssa Hebert and Ian Pingelski to represent Cohoes
High School at the Capital Zone of the New York State
Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and
Dance Awards dinner being held at the Century House Restaurant
on Sunday Feb. 3, 2008.

Students prepare for the
holidays with a winter concert
Cohoes
Middle and High School musicians performed in the annual
concert. The band and chorus students performed separately first
and the concert ended with a grand finale performance by the
entire grades 6-12 music department.
Art teachers and students

At the December Board of Education meeting
several Cohoes High School students and art teacher Erin Welch
talked about the various art courses offered at the high school
and the ways the district is supporting the arts program.

ESOL students recognized for
essays
When
asked how they have changed since coming to America, some
students talked about the difficulty of learning English. Others
mentioned getting a job and a few talked about the differences
in the culture in the country where they lived previously.

inducted into Hall of Fame
John
Bonkoski, a member of the Cohoes High School Football Class of
1999, was inducted into the Cohoes Football Hall of Fame on
Monday, Nov. 19, at the Annual Football Awards Banquet at the
Ukranian Club in Cohoes.

Community Service Club food
drive a success
The
Cohoes High School Community Service Club's food drive this
November was its most successful one ever.
In total, the food collected across the district
was enough to fill 37 boxes with all the fixings for
Thanksgiving for Cohoes families.

Students navigate the stock market through an
online game
Some
of the students in T.J. Keegan's economics class have earned
quite a bit of money through the stock market in the last few
weeks.
Unfortunately for these Cohoes High School
students, they haven't earned actual cash, but "online money"
through the Web site stockmarketgame.org.

Fire Department visits the high
school
On
Thursday, Oct. 18 Mrs. Adams' class had a visit from the Cohoes
Fire Department.
The class had spent the previous week learning
about fire safety and creating a fire escape plan with their
families.

CHS ring lost for 32 years—and
then found
Tinker Young thought he lost his Cohoes High
School Class of 1975 ring in Okinawa, Japan.
But more than 30 years later he was shocked to find out it had
shown up in the pocket of a retired Rensselaer police detective.

District takes proactive
approach to MRSA infection prevention
Recently, there has been some media attention
over MRSA infections, a type of infection caused by the
bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
Some cases have been reported in Saratoga County.
District officials are taking a proactive approach to
ensure the health of students and staff.
Most importantly, students and staff at each school are being
encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water, especially
before eating, after using sports facilities or the restroom. In addition, school officials are making sure
administrators, teachers, school nurses, coaches
and the custodial staff have protective information available
for themselves and to share with the school population. The
importance of sanitation is being reinforced with the cleaning
staff, and special emphasis is being placed on physical
education and sports equipment, locker rooms and common surfaces
and areas.

Students' spirit rallies teams
On
Friday, Oct. 5, Cohoes High School was awash in blue and gold
for the Homecoming Pep Rally.
Dressed in blue and gold, students chanted their
class year, trying to be the loudest class in the gym. There
were signs, whistles, cheerleaders with pom poms waving and the
band.

Junior class receives their
rings
It
was a rite of passage for members of the Cohoes High School
Class of 2009 on Thursday, Oct. 11, as they received their class
rings.
Each year, students are presented with their
rings, customized to include their class year, a stone of their
choice and other symbols to represent different activities.

Student Athletes Donate to
Breast Cancer Support Initiatives
Members
of the JV & Varsity Football, Girls Varsity Soccer and
Cross Country teams donated to Lee National Denim Day, one of
the largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer. The event
was held in October in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness
month.

Jiminy Peak Ski and Snowboard
Club at CHS and CMS
For six fun filled evenings your son or daughter
can enjoy the exciting sports of skiing and snowboarding at
Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort. We begin our program on Tuesday,
Jan. 9, 2007 and run for six consecutive Tuesdays. A coach
bus picks up CHS students at 2:45 and then proceeds to the CMS
for a 3 p.m. pickup. We leave Jiminy at 8 p.m. and are back in
Cohoes at 9 p.m.

Fall College Caravan
The
Counseling Department hosted the Fall College Caravan on Sept.
17, 2007 for senior and junior students.
The College Caravan consisted of approximately fourteen college
representatives from regional colleges and universities.

Sidewalk art contest supports juvenile diabetes
Early
on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 12, students, teachers and
supporters gathered at Van Schaick Grade School for a sidewalk
art contest and fund-raiser for juvenile diabetes.
The contest, sponsored by Cohoes Kids for a Cure, was open to
students in all of the Cohoes schools. In the competition,
students drew chalk drawings on the sidewalk that reflected the
"Character Counts in Cohoes" message.
