Seasonal flu and Novel H1N1 Influenza
Virus Information
Everyone can play a part in keeping students
and staff healthy
Both the seasonal flu and Novel H1N1 Influenza
(originally called "Swine Flu") present health concerns for our
students and staff.
The information below can serve as a guide
during the flu season.
As with any flu virus, including seasonal flu,
there is the potential for transmission in our schools. District
staff members are taking precautions and encouraging appropriate
hand-washing habits for students. Buildings are being cleaned
thoroughly as usual. Parents and guardians can help
at home, too, by reviewing the tips below.
Public
health officials believe that symptoms of H1N1 flu appear one to
seven days after exposure. If you have any of the following
symptoms, contact your physician.
Fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or
greater)
Cough
Sore throat
Body aches
Headache
Chills
Fatigue
Diarrhea
Vomiting
To prevent and minimize the spread of the flu
virus, follow these guidelines:
Anyone with influenza-like illness should stay
home and not attend school, or go into the community for at
least 24 hours after they are free of a fever.
Teach your children to wash hands frequently
with soap and water for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes
to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice). Show them how to
properly use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not
available.
Teach your children to avoid touching their
eyes, nose or mouth – germs are spread this way.
Teach your children to cover coughs and
sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the
elbow.
Teach your children to dispose of used tissues
properly and promptly after use.
Teach your children to stay away from people
who are sick.
