Cohoes Budget Countdown #1
This is the first in a series of budget
questions and answers aimed at keeping the public informed as the
district puts together its proposed 2010-11 budget.
March 1 - Budget season begins for
district
This past January, Gov. David Paterson released
his proposed state budget, calling for a $1.1 billion cut to state
education funding for the 2010-11 school year. For Cohoes, this
could mean a reduction of about $1.2 million – or 7 percent
decrease – in state aid for next year.
Revenues for school districts in New York come
from two main sources – school taxes and state aid. In Cohoes,
state aid accounts for 58 percent of the district’s total
revenues. Prior to the recession, state aid had generally
increased every year to help districts keep pace with the rising
costs of running a school system – salaries, benefits, energy,
etc.
